From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sustainability is an economic, social, and ecological concept. It is intended to be a means of configuring civilization and human activity so that society and its members are able to meet their needs and express their greatest potential in the present, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, and planning and acting for the ability to maintain these ideals indefinitely. Sustainability affects every level of organization, from the local neighborhood to the entire globe. It is a sometimes controversial topic.
SD also relates to the environment and how our actions affect the earth on which we live. Leaders in sustainable development are constantly improving and creating methods to make human industry and living more efficient and environmentally friendly. Issues such as global warming and energy usage are among the main concerns constantly being addressed.
Monitoring consumption and disposal of goods is another large part of sustainable development. Recycling and properly getting rid of wastes is important, as well as making sure that limited resources are not wasted.
Incorporating ecological industrial parks is key to sustainability as well. These parks are a combination of businesses, farms, factories, energy plants, etc. that interact and exchange materials and information in such away that one part’s waste is another part’s treasure. This is a good way to make use of resources over and over.
However, while technology is a great asset to the environment, sustainability is achieved only if the biodiversity and well being of ecosystems are preserved. Technological innovations will not be beneficial if they improve one aspect by ruining another.
