Catholic Church (disambiguation)

The name Catholic Church (literally "the universal church") can be used to refer to a number of entities and conceptualizations, viz.
- "Catholic Church" is the name of the largest Christian group comprising 23 autonomous churches in communion with the Bishop of Rome, also called the Roman Catholic Church.
- The Eastern Orthodox Church also identifies as the Orthodox Catholic Church.
- Some other denominations incorporate the term "Catholic Church" in their name, such as the Old Catholic Church, the Polish National Catholic Church, and the Ecumenical Catholic Church.
- Other churches identify explicitly as Catholic, based on their affirmation of the Nicene Creed, but do not include the term in their proper names (for example, churches of the Anglican Communion and Lutheranism).
- The sense of the "universal" and apostolic church. Most Christian denominations will describe themselves as 'catholic' in this sense based upon the affirmation of the Nicene Creed and/or the Apostles' Creed, that believers are members of the 'One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church'.
- According to an Anglican theological concept called the Branch Theory, the "Catholic Church" is an entity consisting of three "branches" of Catholic and Apostolic Christianity: the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Anglican Communion. Neither the Catholic nor the Orthodox Church accept this theory, which is not official Anglican doctrine.
