It is generally illegal for a person to distribute celebrity sex tapes because many of the videos exist in some copyrighted form. Some of the videos are illegal in certain jurisdictions due to being child pornography. However, at least some tapes, such as 1 Night in Paris, are distributed with the willing participation of the involved parties.

Reportedly, BetUS.com was recently negotiating with Kevin Federline, former husband of Britney Spears, about a deal regarding their alleged sex tape. The tape apparently is more graphic than the Paris Hilton sex tape, and is projected to outsell Hilton's tape.^{[citation needed]}
Actress Sharon Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski, made a sex tape in 1969 on the analog reel to reel video equipment of the time. This tape, whose long rumored existence was confirmed by Polanski in his autobiography, was seized by the Los Angeles Police Department as part of evidence for the Manson Family murders. Unconfirmed reports have claimed that it was stolen from LAPD vaults by a police officer and sold to a private collector.
The first internet celebrity sex video, the honeymoon of Pamela Anderson and then-husband Tommy Lee, was placed online by Internet Entertainment Group in 1998.

Taiwanese TV journalist and politician Chu Mei-feng was covertly videotaped alongside her married short-time lover Tseng Chung-ming by her friends Kuo Yu-ling (郭玉鈴) and Tsai Jen-chien (蔡仁堅), and this tape was later distributed by local paparazzi magazine Scoop Weekly (獨家報導) in December 2001.
The ex-husband of model Carolyn Murphy, Jake Schroeder allegedly tried to sell a tape featuring him and his ex-wife having sex during their honeymoon in 1999 while in Barbados.[1] In January 2006 Schroeder was arrested and charged with extortion for trying to sell the tape [2]. The video was leaked onto the internet in April 2006 [3].
Actor Rob Lowe appeared in a tape with two female fans, one of whom was underage, though he was not aware of this.
Adult film actress Janine Lindemulder and rock star Vince Neil appeared in a tape together.

Rapper Trina was said to be on a sex tape, which was sold by a website not associated with the female rapper. After the engagement of Trina's lawyers, all references to Trina had to be removed. It has never been confirmed, whether the former stripper was or was not part of this video.

Australian celebrity Mimi McPherson, sister of Elle McPherson, appeared having sex with her then boyfriend in a home-made video.
Kid Rock and former Creed lead singer Scott Stapp are featured in a 45 minutes sex video with four fans on the tour bus [4]. Kid Rock is suing World Wide Red Light District company to try to stop them from distributing the tape [5].
Bam Margera and Jenn Rivell have a sex tape that was released in 2003. The tape was completely censored with color alterations by Bam himself.
Gülben Ergen, a Turkish singer and sometime actress, is featured in a sex video leaked out by an ex-boyfriend in 2006.
Norwegian stars from Big Brother (Sweden and Norway), Linni Meister and Kristian Hilberg, were filmed having sex. The video is featured on the Internet.
Imogen Thomas from Big Brother 7 UK is featured in a 7 minute video.
Michelle Vieth, American born lead actress from the popular 1997 Mexican soup opera "Pequeña Traviesa" had a leaked home video, which she claims was released by her ex-husband. He denies both this fact and being with her in the tape. The tape includes nudity and shows her performing some oral sex on a man.
Daniella Cicarelli, ex-wife of Brazilian soccer striker Ronaldo and model, was caught in the beach in Spain having sex with her boyfriend Tato Malzoni.
Colombian soap opera actress Lully Bossa appears in a poor quality video with her gym trainer in 2001.
Around 2004 or so, Venezuelan actress Roxana Diaz appears in sex tape with another venezuelan actor. The tape is about 30 minutes and include oral and anal sex.
Saved by the Bell star Dustin Diamond, who played Screech on the popular NBC Teen sitcom, released a sex tape involving he and 2 unidentified females to combat financial troubles. In the tape, Diamond performs what is commonly known as a Dirty Sanchez.
Oscar "Ozzy" Lusth from Survivor participated in a reality dating show called Foursome on Playboy TV. The adult show shows Lusth and another male participant with two other women. The show includes the participants in a jacuzzi, wrestling naked in a small pool of pudding, showering together, foreplay lessons, and sexual activity.

[edit] Rumoured or disputed sex tapes

Many tapes that are released or believed to be available can claim to be of a particular celebrity but certain factors challenge the validity of these claims. In the case of disputed tapes many things such as poor quality video, bad lighting and similarities in physical features can make many question whether the tape is of the celebrity mentioned. While in cases where there is no video or clips available it will generally be regarded as rumoured until further evidence arises.

A tape has been put out with initial false claims that it depicted Allison Williams, Miss West Virginia 2003. It has been suggested that this tape instead shows an American TV reporter of the same name, with her cameraman. [6]
In 2001, a near-30-minute video appearing on the Internet depicted a couple having sex, who were later said to be Hungarian ex-gymnast and TV reporter Zsuzsa Csisztu and rifle shooting olympic champion Attila Solti. Despite the striking resemblances and Solti being mentioned on the video as "the one handling the camera", both continue to deny the accusations.(Link 1, Link 2)
Ethel Booba and her now ex- boyfriend, basketball player Alex Crisano made a sex tape. She says it's not her in the tape, though her sister says it's his and her voices in the tape. ([7])
Joan Crawford was rumored to have appeared in a stag film in the 1920's. Legend holds that Louis B. Mayer bought up all copies. No verified copy exists today.
In June 2006, a supposed homemade porn film was found of Mexican TV host Ivonne Soto. She has worked for the popular TV show La Hora Pico, and has made several appearances on shows like Vida TV. When asked about it she said it was a rumor and it was not true. She then found contradicting herself by admitting to be the one engaging in sexual acts with the unknown man. It was later discovered that the name of the unknown man is Marco Ibarra.
In 2006 some websites reported that a sex tape involving Ashlee Simpson had leaked onto the internet. A few screenshots also accompanied the report. However, many dispute the reports and believe that the photos and alleged video are fake.
A film in the 1950s called The Apple Knockers and the Coke was purported to feature Marilyn Monroe, but is now recognized to star Playboy model Arline Hunter. A disputed film believed by many to star Monroe exists, and is in the collection of the Hollywood Erotic Museum.
Australian actress Kate Ritchie, star of TV soap "Home & Away" allegedly featured in a sex tape. However it has never been confirmed (or denied) that it actually is Ms. Ritchie in the video.
It is rumored that a copy of a sex tape involving Britney Spears and her husband Kevin Federline had been stolen from Spears' home in 2005. US Weekly published this rumor and Spears sued the magazine in December 2005. In November 2006 it was reported that Spears lost the case. [8] Since, it has been rumored that Federline is going to sell the 4 hour long sex movie if Spears does not pay $30 million for the divorce and gives Federline custody of both their children. [9]
Kelsey Grammer sued Internet Entertainment Group under the mistaken impression that it had purchased from Grammer's former girlfriend Cerlette Lamme, a sex tape the couple had made. He dropped the suit after IEG countersued and stated that it had not bought or possessed the video his ex-girlfriend had been trying to sell. Grammer reportedly bought the tape from his former girlfriend for $1 million.[10]
Ulrika Jonsson won a court order banning footballer Stan Collymore from selling an explicit video of the pair indulging in sexual activity.[11]
It is reported that Paris Hilton has made a lesbian sex tape with playmate Nicole Marie Lenz. Lenz has spoken about this in an interview with the British newspaper News of the World. [12] This rumor was first reported in November 2003. [13]
It is rumored that a sex video in which soccer stars Frank Lampard, Kieron Dyer, and Rio Ferdinand were in a tape uncovered in 2000. In it they were sleeping with two women in Spain.
An alleged sex tape of O.J. Simpson and two prostitutes was distributed over the internet in June 2006 at http://www.badoj.com. Simpson's lawyer acknowledges that Simpson does appear fully clothed in the tape but that the man engaged in sex acts with the same women is simply a look-alike. The tape's distributor maintains that the man in the tape is, in fact, Simpson [14].
There are videos that supposedly show Ashanti but it has been disputed.

Some videos that have surfaced can allege to be of a particular celebrity but have turned out to be fake.

In the 1970s, a porno film was purported to feature Barbra Streisand before she became a star. The clip has floated around for decades and the woman does bear a striking resemblance to Streisand. The woman has since been revealed to be porn star Tasha Voux. According to Streisand, she actually viewed the film herself out of curiosity. [15]
TLC host Paige Davis - A video, allegedly made by her and her ex-boyfriend in 1997, surfaced in December 2004. It was later reported that the woman was not Davis.
In 2002 a sex tape featuring a woman alleged to be Christina Aguilera appeared on the internet. Experts determined that it was not Aguilera and was merely a look-alike.
A tape of an American local TV reporter named Allison Williams with her cameraman led to the reporter's dismissal. The tape has since circulated with the false claim that it depicts a different Allison Williams, who was Miss West Virginia 2003. The latter Williams has sued websites advertising the tape for sale or download.
A tape was released that allegedly featured American Pie star Alyson Hannigan nude and performing oral sex on an unidentified man. This turned out to be the adult movie actress Luna Lane.
Early in Britney Spears' career a video appeared around the internet entitled "pre-fame sex tape", that was supposedly of Spears. Upon close inspection the woman in the video is clearly not Spears and only bore a resemblance to Spears.
A nude model by the name of Leanna Scott made an adult film, looking nearly identical to popular model Tila Nguyen. A rumor started that Tila had made a hardcore porn film earlier in her career. Nguyen publicly announced on her Myspace blog that it was not her in the video.
Serbian tabloid claimed that Maja Mandzuka, Serbian actress, shot a porn movie, and published a few screenshots. It was soon discovered that the screenshots were from a mainstream hardcore porn movie, and the actress in the movie was not Maja but some unidentified porn actress.[16]
A film circulating for years as starring Chuck Connors involved in gay sex acts was later proven to be of a lookalike.
