Image:HK Chater Road LegCo view.jpg Central (中環, Jyutping: zung1 waan4; Pinyin: Zhōnghuán) station is an MTR station located in the Central area of Hong Kong Island. The station's livery is firebrick red, except for the station's Tsuen Wan Line platform where its livery is dark brown. The station is the southern terminus for the Tsuen Wan Line and also connects with the Island Line, and also the Tung Chung Line</font>
and the Airport Express via Hong Kong station.
The Central Station was once known as two separate stations in English: Chater and Pedder. In Chinese, however, the name remained ubiquitous as "中環".
In 1982, the station opened as services of the Tsuen Wan Line commenced. The part serving the line (Platforms 1 and 2) was called Chater after Chater Road. The part serving the Island Line (Platforms 3 and 4) opened in 1986, and was known as Pedder after Pedder Street. Later both names were superseded by the name Central.
More than 200,000 passengers use this station daily.

[edit] Station Layout
Central Station has 4 platforms, excluding those of Hong Kong Station. Hong Kong Station is linked to Central Station with an underground passageway in the paid area.
[edit] Connections to Airport Railway
As part of the Airport Core Programme ([1]) during the 1990s, a passage was built between Central and Hong Kong stations to allow transfers from the Island Line and Tsuen Wan Line to the Airport Express and Tung Chung Line. The passage opened in 1998 with the opening of these two new lines of the MTR.
[edit] Platforms
- Platforms 1 & 2: Tsuen Wan Line to Tsuen Wan
Platforms 1 and 2 are situated on a shared Island platform. They are served by the Tsuen Wan Line and were built directly under Chater Road, extending from Des Voeux Road Central to Club Street. These platforms make up the southern terminus of the Tsuen Wan Line.
- Platform 3: Island Line to Chai Wan
- Platform 4: Island Line to Sheung Wan
Platforms 3 and 4 are built beneath Des Voeux Road Central at the intersection of Pedder Street, stretching from World-Wide House to Alexandra House. These two platforms sandwich the two previous-mentioned platforms. They are side platforms built on the northern side of the road, with Platform 3 on top of Platform 4. Escalators are provided at extreme ends of the Tsuen Wan Line island platform for passengers arriving from Kowloon whose final destinations are Sheung Wan; i.e, so they can get to Platform 4.
[edit] Exits
Central Station stretches across the entire length of Central. Hence it is not surprising to find it having a large number of exits. Note that there is no Exit I, to avoid confusion with the number one.

[edit] Transport Connections
Central is also one of the transport hubs of Hong Kong. The area around Central (and Hong Kong stations) has a wide range of transport options that includes tramways, buses, ferries, minibuses and more. These are all the connections the commuter can refer to when travelling to areas not served by the MTR network from Central.

[edit] Peak Tram
The Peak Tram provides a monorail service up the hill from Garden Road to the Peak. The climb is very steep (up to a gradient of 1 to 2) and provides a lovely scenic view. That is why it is a popular tourist attraction. Tourists or commuters who wish to get to the Peak Tram can get out at Exit J3 and walk across Queen's Road Central to reach the Peak Tram station.
[edit] Ferry Service
The Hong Kong Outlying Island Ferry Pier provides ferry services to many outlying islands including Peng Chau, Cheung Chau, Lamma Island, Park Island on Ma Wan and Mui Wo and Discovery Bay on Lantau Island. Commuters who wish to use the Ferry Pier can walk over to the Hong Kong Station and get out at the In Town Check-in Counters. Then, they can walk across the bus terminus and walk to their respective pier.
[edit] Star Ferry
The Star Ferry is a ferry service that has been in operation for over a century. It provides routes to Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom. Not only that it is one of Hong Kong's symbols (hence another popular tourist attraction), it is also a very cheap method to cross Victoria Harbour. Passengers who wish to use the Star Ferry can get out at Exit K and walk through the subway to the Star Ferry Pier.
