Chanhassen is a city located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 20,321 at the 2000 census. Although the bulk of Chanhassen is in Carver County, it also extends into Hennepin County.

In July of 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Chanhassen 16th on its list of the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 59.3 km² (22.9 mi²). 53.8 km² (20.8 mi²) of it is land and 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it (9.26%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 20,321 people, 6,914 households, and 5,524 families residing in the city. The population density was 377.6/km² (978.1/mi²). There were 7,013 housing units at an average density of 130.3/km² (337.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.90% White, 0.75% African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.83% Asian, 0.41% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.98% of the population.

There were 6,914 households out of which 51.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.2% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.1% were non-families. 15.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.33.

In the city the population was spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 37.0% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $84,215, and the median income for a family was $93,092. Males had a median income of $62,112 versus $38,821 for females. The per capita income for the city was $36,008. About 1.4% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
