[edit] History

The Chicago Wolves are a hockey team which plays in the American Hockey League. Originally a member of the International Hockey League, the Wolves joined the AHL after the IHL folded in 2001. The team has been notably successful, never in its history suffering a losing season and winning the IHL's Turner Cup in 1998 and 2000 and the AHL's Calder Cup in 2002. Last season was the first year in team history the Wolves failed to make the playoffs.

The team's great star was forward Steve Maltais, who until his retirement after the 2004-2005 season had played every season of the franchise and holds most of its scoring records. Other notable players include goaltender Wendell Young, ex-Pittsburgh star Rob Brown and defenseman Bob Nardella.

They are currently the AHL affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers.

[edit] Television

The Wolves are the only AHL team with a full television package. All 80 regular-season games, plus playoffs, are broadcast on Comcast cable. This is especially notable in contrast to the city's NHL franchise, the Chicago Blackhawks, whose owner Bill Wirtz has steadfastly refused to allow Blackhawks home games to be locally televised. Broadcast announcers are Pat Foley and Billy Gardner.
