Chink is an old English word meaning a slit or narrow gap. From this we get "chinking", the material pounded into the spaces between the planks of a ship. Another common usage is "a chink in the armor", meaning a vulnerability. Chinese people were once referred to as "chink eyed", shortened to "chinks". This eventually became a pejorative as the original understanding of the word was lost.
