Benzyl chloride, or α-chlorotoluene, is an organic compound consisting of a benzene ring substituted with a chloromethyl group. It can be prepared by the chlorination of toluene.
Benzyl chloride is used in organic synthesis for the introduction of the benzyl protecting group for alcohols and carboxylic acids.
Benzyl chloride also reacts very readily with magnesium to produce a Grignard Reagent.
Benzyl chloride is a lachrymator and is also irritating to skin and mucous membranes. Because of these properties, it has been used as a war gas.
