Classical ballet is a dance to classical music. It requires many years of training in form and technique. The proper dress includes tights and a leotard (which can come in various colours), with an optional skirt (or tutu). The dancer wears soft technique shoes until their bones are strong enough and they have trained for long enough to wear pointe shoes. The bones in their ankles and feet must be strong to go on pointe.

There are six styles of training in classical ballet, the most common being Vaganova method, Cecchetti method, Royal method, and Balanchine method. The techniques found in classical ballet are a framework for many other styles of dance, including hip hop dance and modern ballet.
