The Egyptian coat of arms is a golden eagle looking toward the left. The symbol dates from the time of Saladin.

[edit] Appearance

On the pedestal, on which the so-called "Eagle of Saladin" stands, appears in Arabic script the national name Jumhuriyat Misr al-Arabiya ("Arab Republic of Egypt"). The eagle carries on its breast a shield with the flag's colors — but with a vertical instead of a horizontal configuration. After the end of the United Arab Republic in 1961, the eagle carried two stars in this place until 1971. Between 1972 and 1984 the eagle was replaced by the golden hawk of Qureish, as part of the symbolism of the Federation of Arab Republics.
