[edit] General Information
Coloring books are generally used by children, though coloring books for adults are also available. They cover a wide range of subjects, from simple stories for children to intricate or abstract designs for adults.
Since the 1980s, several publishers have produced educational coloring books intended for studying graduate-level topics such as anatomy and physiology, where color-coding of many detailed diagrams can be a useful learning aid.
[edit] Printed Coloring Books
Traditional Coloring Books and Coloring Pages are printed on paper or card.
Some coloring books have perforated edges so their pages can be removed from the books and used as individual sheets. Others may include a story line and so are intended to be left intact.
Today many children's coloring books feature popular cartoon characters. They are often used as promotional materials for animated motion pictures.
Coloring Books may also incorporate other activities such as dot-to-dot, mazes and other puzzles. Some Coloring Books also incorporate the use of stickers.
[edit] Downloadable Coloring Book Pages
There are a huge number of sites on the internet now that include downloadable coloring pages. These pages are usually presented as images (such as GIF) or in the form of documents (typically PDF).
[edit] Coloring Book Software
Like many other activities, coloring-in has gone digital.
There is a large number of sites that allow online coloring in (via Java applets).
Many children's software products either incorporate or are dedicated to coloring in. Notable examples include Kea Coloring Book [1] and the Coloring Book series from DatawareGames [2].
