Congo most commonly refers to one of two African countries:
- The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), sometimes known as "Congo-Kinshasa." Known as "Zaire" from 1971-1997.
- The Republic of the Congo (ROC), often known as "Congo-Brazzaville."

- Kingdom of Kongo, the African kingdom, dating back before the 1400s, that was eventually divided by European colonizers into:
- French Congo (1880) → Middle Congo (1906) → French Equatorial Africa (1910) → ROC (1960)
- Congo Free State (1885; a kingdom owned by King Leopold II of Belgium) → Belgian Congo (1908) → ROC/DRC (1966) → Zaire (1971) → DRC (1997)
- Portuguese Congo (1885) → Cabinda and Angola (1975)
