Cosmos bipinnatus, or the "Mexican Aster", was introduced to Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. Cosmos were popular in Europe for a time, but are rarely seen there today. The old Cosmos had 20 different varieties . The Aster's family is "Sonata", a family of flowers that grow strong and can withstand a lot of rain and wind.

Asters are generally annuals, although they may seed a second generation. They grow in fertile soil. The Aster's height can reach up to two through four feet. This flower comes in white, purple, pink, lavender, red, and orange.

Asters grow well in poor soil or dry areas. The flowers of the Aster attract birds and butterflies, like the Monarch butterfly.
