Czecho-Slovakia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Czecho-Slovakia (in Czech and in Slovak Česko-Slovensko) was the official short name of the country of Czechoslovakia used instead of the form "Czechoslovakia":
- until 1920 (according to some sources until 1923)
- then again from late 1938 to early 1939
- finally again from April 1990 to the Dissolution of Czechoslovakia (December 31, 1992)
(see e.g. History of Czechoslovakia for details)
The name was originally conceived to be an equivalent of the name "Austria-Hungary" (i.e. the correct English translation would be "Czechia-Slovakia"), but since "česko-" also means "Czecho-", a shift in meaning arose quickly.
Nowadays, the now defunct country of Czechoslovakia is known as "Czechoslovakia" (Československo) according to official Czech spelling rules, while it is still known as "Czecho-Slovakia" (Česko-Slovensko) according to official Slovak spelling rules.cs:Česko-Slovensko
