Ebbsfleet International railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ebbsfleet International railway station is a new railway station at Ebbsfleet, a few miles east of the M25 motorway on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (now called High Speed 1 (or HS1)) in the borough of Dartford and near to Northfleet railway station, and is expected to open November 14th, 2007.
"Ebbsfleet International Station" was the name originally proposed for this station, but was changed to "Dartford International Station" at the urging of Eurostar, who felt that Dartford was a name with greater recognition. This caused controversy as the station although in Dartford Borough is closer to Gravesend than Dartford.<ref name="controversy">"Row over Euro-link station name", BBC News, October 29, 2004.</ref> Also the similarity of its name to that of Dartford's existing station was of great concern. As of 2006 the station appears to have reverted back to its originally proposed Ebbsfleet name (as shown on this signpost on the A2).
Ebbsfleet International Station will be served by Eurostar, with up to four trains per hour in peak time, as well as high-speed domestic services, with a 15 minute journey time to St Pancras. There will be 9,000 car park spaces across six car parks with 3,000 spaces available for domestic passengers. It was formerly planned that Crossrail would terminate at the station, but under the current plan, Abbey Wood further west will be the eastern terminus.
During the 2012 Summer Olympic venues, Eurostar trains will not stop at Stratford International station[1] (in the Olympic Park) due to the congestion expected there from Olympic Javelin shuttles. All passengers travelling on Eurostars from continental Europe to the Olympic Park will thus have to change trains at Ebbsfleet International.
