Democratic Awakening (German: Demokratischer Aufbruch) was an East German opposition political movement. It was founded on 16/17 December 1989 in Leipzig. Leading members included Rainer Eppelmann, Wolfgang Schnur and Angela Merkel. It supported rapid German reunification and formed part of the Alliance for Germany (Allianz für Deutschland) for the 1990 Volkskammer elections. On August 5, 1990 it merged into the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, ceasing to exist.
