The Deuteromycota (which means, in Greek, "second fungi") are a formal division, or taxon of the fungi (ascomycetes and basidiomycetes, which includes fungi in which sexual reproduction is unknown.
They are also referred to in informal Latin as the Fungi imperfecti, and more recently as mitosporic fungi, and the "imperfect fungi".
Deuteromycota is a sort of miscellaneous junk category for forms of uncertain affinity, and is not treated formally in more recent systems, although it is still used widely by plant pathologists (see plant pathology) for the purposes of quick diagnosis and when the teleomorph stage of the particular organism is unknown.
Because sexual reproduction is the basis for classification of fungi, it is often difficult to place these fungi in their appropriate group (when they lack sexual reproduction). The use of DNA testing (such as 5s ribosomal testing) can often clarify their taxonomic relationships but can require extensive scientific efforts.
Asexual phases of different fungi are used in the production of some medicines and cheeses and other foods. The asexual phases of other species cause infections on plants and animals (including humans). Penicillum mold is a good example. They may be called as deuteromycetes, imperfect fungi, fungi imperfecti and an artificial taxon (polyphyletic).

[edit] Classes
- Blastomycetes (Not a "fashionable" class, with its yeast members currently nested within the Hyphomycetes)
Orders: Moniliales (conidiophores)
Orders Melanconiales (acervuli) Sphaeropsidales (pycnidia)
[edit] General Characteristics
1. Their spores have an unknown sexual urge
2. They are only terrestial(only found in land)
3. Many are probably ascomycetes, since they form conidia
4. Others are sygomycetes or basidiomycetes that have lost sexual reproduction
Examples: Penicillium (this might also be in ascomycetes), Aspergillus
[edit] Deuteromycota as an Imperfect Fungi
Deuteromycota is also known as the imperfect fungi because it is an artificial grouping of all organisms that are known to be fungi, but are unable to be placed within any smaller division within the kingdom. Most are witin this division because they have no known sexual reproductive cycle. Most are thought to be related to the ascomycetes; the rest are thought to be either zygomycetes or basidiomycetes.
