[edit] What are Devil Fruits?
They are said to be the fruit of the Sea Devil and that the secret to their power is hidden in the Grand Line. Because encounters with them are rare (especially outside the Grand Line) a number of rumours about them have risen making it difficult to tell whether some things are fact or fiction. The average person knows nothing or very little about what they are.
The Devil Fruit, when consumed, gives the consumer a power or special trait. There are more than 100 types of Devil Fruit, <ref name="SBS1"> SBS questions: One Piece Manga - Vol.4 Chapter 33, Fan question: About how many are there in the "Devil Fruit Series", and what kind of fruits will turn up? </ref> they come in different shapes, colors, and all Devil Fruits have swirl marks on them of some kind. Only one bite is needed for the power of a Devil Fruit to be yours, and after that, the Devil Fruit becomes a simple, useless, disgusting fruit. Although, it has been shown that you do not even need to bite or chew it. If you swallow it whole, as Buggy did, the effects are still the same. Modern science has also found a way for everyday objects also 'eat' the Devil Fruit, this means Devil Fruit objects such as Lasso the dog/gun and Funkfreed the elephant/sword can now exist.
While the storyline hasn't revealed it, there seems to be certain ways of telling what powers a Devil Fruit will grant you. Shanks and his crew already knew Luffy's Devil Fruit was the Gomu Gomu no Mi before he consumed it. Spandam mentions that the Devil Fruits he supplied to Kaku and Kalifa were not listed in any catalogs anywhere as to what powers they granted. He also mentions briefly that Devil Fruits have aura around them which can often help identify them and that the two Devil Fruits he had contained an unknown aura.
In the original two pilots of One Piece, Luffy's Devil Fruit power, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, was the power of the Gomu Gomu tree that grew once every 50 years and there were no signs there existed other powers.
It should be noted that many of the fruit names come from Japanese onomatopoeia and Japanese vocabulary.
[edit] Side Effects of Devil Fruits
With this new power comes a weakness, though, as the Devil Fruit user is cast away by the sea, and becomes helpless if submerged in water (or "become a hammer" as most characters in the series slang it). It should be noted that this applies to all types of water, not just sea water as commonly assumed by fans, as stated in an SBS. However, if the user's body is permanently changed by the fruit, like Luffy's is, then the user's ability can still be manipulated by outside sources underwater (for example, Luffy's neck could still be stretched). The weakness to the sea can prove deadly to many Devil Fruit users, as most are pirates who are sailing the Grand Line.
The weakness to the sea is disputable as to how intense it really is. In many cases, we see the Devil fruit user unable to move at all, but in other cases, they can splash around and stay above the water, as Luffy did as a child. However, that may have been because the fruit was only recently consumed. Yet, Buggy the Clown sank completely when he fell into the ocean a few seconds after consuming his fruit, thus disproving this claim. Another theory is that it depends on the person who consumed the fruit, or even what type of fruit was consumed. Mr.2 was also able to stay above water when he first met the Straw Hat pirates. Another theory is that the amount of the fruit eaten can affect how long the eater can splash around and stay above the water.
A common rumor, as told by Cipher Pol's Jyabura, consists of Devil Fruits housing actual devils, the likes of which will fight when placed in proximity of one another. The resulting battle would destroy the user's body. Nevertheless, Blueno contradicted such a claim, stating that Grand Line scientists have noted only the phemonenon of one's body destroying itself if one is to actually consume two Devil Fruits.
Furthermore, devil fruit can be affected by Seastone
The effects of Devil Fruit and seastone are researched heavily by Doctor Begabang, a Navy's Scientist. He is also the one that devised the method to let objects merge with devil fruits.
[edit] Types of Devil Fruits
Fruits introduced so far, are classified into three different groups: Paramecia, Zoan, and Logia.
[edit] Paramecia-type
(超人系 Chōjin-kei, read as Paramishia), known as "Paramythia" in the English anime.
- Effect: These alter the user's body in some way. For example: Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi, which changes the user's body into stretchable rubber; also, Buggy the Clown's Bara Bara no Mi, which gives the user command over splitting apart his own body and controlling the pieces at will.
- Strengths: Grants the user the ability to do a trait that can be classified only as 'superhuman'.
- Weakness: The Paramecia type is also the group that contains the powers or special traits that are considered 'useless' to the user, granting little or no real advantage what so ever. Paramecia types are also the easiest to fight against because while the strengths of their powers give them an advantage, they also make them easy to predict and often their abilities are displayed to their fullest within a very short period of time.
- Other information: Paramecias are the most common of the Devil Fruits types. Paramecia fruits can be divided into several subcategories, as it is impossible to generalize the powers. For instance, Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi is always active, meaning that he's a rubber human at all times. Other users, like Miss Valentine or Miss Doublefinger must mentally activate the changes in their bodies, while again others like Foxy and Mr. 5 can't change their bodies at all. They however all seem to come in two basic types, abilities that directly affect the body(Gomu, Bara, Sube, Kilo, Baku, Mane, Supa, Toge, Bane, Kachi) and abilities that give the user some power(Bomu, Doru, Hana, Ori, Noro, Doa, Hiso, Awa, Kama, Goe). Whatever powers a paramecia fruit gives, it is based on the concept of either a characteristic like slipperiness or slowness, or an object like a bomb or a door.

| Gomu Gomu no Mi (ゴムゴムの実) | |
| Image:Gomu gomu pistol.jpg | |
| Meaning: "Gomu" is the Japanese word for "rubber." | |
| English name: Gum Gum Fruit | |
| Effect: Permanently turns the body into extremely durable natural rubber, allowing the user to stretch his or her body like rubber and become immune to regular blows, falling, bullets, and lightning. However, the user's body can be affected by sharp objects, explosives, fire and ice, and a "fist of love". | |
| Consumed by: Monkey D. Luffy. | |
| Bara Bara no Mi (バラバラの実) | |

[edit] Zoan-type
(動物系 Dōbutsu-kei, read as Zōn-kei), from "Zoanthropy," is the Animal Transformation Class.
- Effect: Allows the user to transform into an animal. This fruit provides three forms: the user's natural form, a full animal form (where the animal's size is often greatly exaggerated), and a hybrid form, combining both original and animal form (usually in a bizarre way).
- Strength: Mainly improves physical abilities and allows the user to use his or her 3 forms to adapt to a situation during a fight to find the form that gives the biggest advantage. In their hybrid form Zoan users experience enhanced senses as this form uses a combination of both animals abilities. This fruit type is most useful when applied to objects such as guns or swords, giving a otherwise inanimate object life and increasing its value to the owner of the item.
- Weakness: They are limited to the capabilities of the animal they are able to transform into. The Zoan type Devil Fruit is also wasted if eaten by the creature it represents, for example the Hito Hito no mi is wasted if a human eats it. However, in the case of the Hito Hito no mi (and most likely all cases with the Zoan Devil Fruit types) if a human ate it they would become enlightened.
- Other information: While most Zoan users can only use the three forms, the Straw Hat Pirate's doctor Tony Tony Chopper can utilize more forms for a given amount of time with the aid of the "Rumble Ball", which he developed. It was stated by Chopper that carnivorous Zoans are considerably more bloodthirsty than other Zoans. A majority of the Zoan Devil fruits also come in different "models" that result in variations of the animal. For example, the Inu Inu (Dog) Fruit has a Jackal model, a Dachshund model and a Wolf model. The Ushi Ushi (Cow) Fruit has a Bison model and a Giraffe model. The Neko Neko (Cat) fruit has a Leopard model. A notable fact regarding The Tori Tori (bird) Fruit is that according to Pell there are only five known flying powers in the world. This was stated in chapter 169 in the manga.

[edit] Logia-type
(自然系 Shizen-kei, read as Rogia-kei)
- Effect:With these fruits, the user may actually become a natural element in its entirety. Ever since their abilities are gained, they are neither completely human nor element in their default state. However, Logia users have the option of turning completely into their element if they so wish. This is often used for crossing great distances quickly, or avoiding blows should their weakness have been discovered.
- Strength: The most powerful of the three groups. Even in their default states, Logia users are near invincible, taking no damage from physical attacks. For example, a blow can pass right through the user, while he maintains the rest of his body, and even can hold onto objects at the same time. If the ability is honed well enough, the user can manipulate anything related to their element, as well. For instance, through Crocodile's sand powers, he could control dryness and absorb moisture. In a similar example, Enel could utilize the heat of his electricity to melt down, and reshape metals, by way of smelting. Logia users can tap unlimited amounts of their respective elements from their own bodies, and the "extracted" element be manipulated however the user wishes.
- Weakness: Thus far there have been very few ways in which a person may do physical harm on a Logia user. The main method of causing harm to a Logia user (aside from exploiting the effects of the sea and seastone) are natural weaknesses which, when exploited, can ultimately negate the Logia power. An example of this is Luffy landing blows on Enel regardless of the Goro Goro no Mi's electric powers because of his rubber body. The only other time a physical blow may hurt the user is when he or she is caught off guard, as this gives the user no time to react to the attack. An example is when Luffy bust into a bar in Arabasta sending both Smoker and Portgas D. Ace (both Logia users) flying through a wall. However the powers of a Logia can be trained to counter this problem, an example being Sir Crocodile's, who honed his abilities to the point of being able to turn on his powers as a reflex to a blow.
- Other information: Logia is the rarest of the three groups of Devil Fruit. Logia users can control their element that is existing in the environment (Alabasta's desert terrain grants Crocodile nigh-invincibility) but cannot control their elements if the element is in another form (for example Aokiji can control ice but not water) but they may manipulate their surroundings into generating it. Examples are Aokiji freezing an ocean, Crocodile turning a field of grass into a mini-desert, and Enel turning a cloud into a thunder cloud. These Devil Fruits are also not limited to the classical elements: fire, water, earth, air and aether but includes physical states like smoke and sand.

| Moku Moku no Mi (モクモクの実) | |

| Consumed by: Captain Gasparde. | |
[edit] Unnamed
As anyone may expect with a series, there are some Devil Fruits featured which are not openly named.
In chapter 426, two such unnamed Devil Fruits were shown, both apparently Paramecia.
- Orb?: Allows the user to transform their body parts into a multitude of orbs or spheres, much like the Bara Bara no Mi. The user may also be immune to blunt attacks (the user took a powerful punch to the stomach) like the Bara Bara no Mi is to cutting. Due to the sound effect present, it may be named the Poko Poko no Mi (ポコポコの実, Poko Poko no Mi), it could also be named the Dama Dama no Mi (ダマダマの実, Dama Dama no Mi), as "Dama" means "ball," which the user's body parts resemble. Eaten by a Marine with a large afro and an X-shaped scar near his forehead.
- Rust?: Allows the user to seemingly disintegrate metals with his bare hands. While it is not specifically explained, the user may be producing rust that causes the metal to come apart. It could thus be named the Sabi Sabi no Mi (サビサビの実, Sabi Sabi no Mi), due to "sabi" meaning rust. However, the user may possibly be generating acid to dissolve the metal, producing the smoke and heat shown like all acid and metal reactions. Regardless of what the explanation is, the ability apparently works even on legendary swords of high quality. This was woefully found out by Zoro who had his Yubishiri destroyed. Eaten by a veiled Marine.
