The term dissolve has several meanings:

  • In biology, to dissolve means to separate liquids from solids to gases. That eventually turn into evaporation. That means that dissolving is the complete cycle of science.
  • In chemistry, it is the act of solvation, a solute is dissolved in a solvent, creating a solution. A solute may be solid, liquid, or gaseous.
  • In film and video editing, it means a gradual transition between pieces of footage. See dissolve (film).
  • The term also refers to the process of dispersing into smaller parts or making something disappear.
