Mechanotaxis, also known as durotaxis, is the directed movement of cell motility or outgrowth, e.g. in the case of axonal outgrowth, either up or down a rigidity gradient. These rigidity gradients are often present in biomaterials seeded with cells of interest, where the gradients are established by altering the degree of cross-linking in the polymer.
