- Mexican general election, 2000 - Vicente Fox historic victory over the long-ruling, Institutional Revolutionary Party and the first defeat of party of government in Mexico in 71 years.
- U.S. presidential election, 2000 - George W. Bush defeats Al Gore in the most controversial and closest presidential election in U.S. history after winning the extremely tight race in Florida. Bush won 271 electoral votes (just one electoral vote above the total necessary for a victory) yet lost the popular vote by 500,000 votes to Gore.
- Toronto municipal election, 2000 - Mel Lastman re-elected as mayor of Toronto, Canada
