Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook is a 1958 (see 1958 in music) album by the American Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, with a studio orchestra conducted and arranged by Paul Weston, focusing on the songs of Irving Berlin.
This album is an important part of her 'Songbook' project, in which she recorded albums that featured the talents of America's greatest songwriters, who wrote the Great American Songbook.
This album was the fourth in her Songbook project, following earlier efforts concentrating on;
- Cole Porter (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook) (1956)
- Rodgers and Hart (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook) (1956)
- Duke Ellington (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook) (1957)
Four later albums would focus on;
- George and Ira Gershwin (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook) (1959)
- Harold Arlen (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Harold Arlen Songbook) (1961)
- Jerome Kern (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Jerome Kern Songbook) (1963)
and
Ella's voice is on fine form throughout, with her recording of 'Blue Skies' providing a magnificent backdrop for her scat singing.
Ella's performance on this album won her the 1959 Grammy Awards for Best Vocal Performance, Female and Best Jazz Performance, Individual.
