Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday at Newport is a 1958 (see 1958 in music) live album by the great American jazz singers Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday recorded at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival.
Ella's first track promoted her recent release Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook, and after several teething problems with the microphone, and tempo problems on “I'm Gonna Sit Right Down (And Write Myself a Letter) ”, Ella delivers a stunning scat solo on “Air Mail Special”, quoting from several recent pop hits.
Billie Holiday is introduced by the great songwriter Johnny Mercer, and she sounds particularly haggard on this record, with her premature death less than three years away.
Carmen McRae's performance of that year was featured on the albums 2000 Verve CD Reissue.
Unfortunately, Ella, Billie, and Carmen don't sing in duet, but this record does offer the listener a unique oppourtunity to compare and contrast three great jazz singers at differing stages of their careers.
