Emery boards are pieces of cardboard which have emery affixed, or have emery paper glued to them. They are generally used as nail files for smoothing out rough edges of nails in manicures and pedicures.

Because emery boards are inexpensive, they are a sanitary, disposable alternative to metal nail files.

Emery boards are an easy way for baseball pitchers to "scuff" the ball, giving it more grip and movement. This manipulation of the ball is regarded as cheating. In the most infamous incident in the major leagues, Joe Niekro, a baseball player for the Minnesota Twins, was caught with an emery board in his pocket. He was suspended for ten games.
