In Greek mythology, Ethon or The Eagle Kaukasios was a gigantic eagle born of the monsters Typhon and Echidna. As punishment for stealing fire from Mount Olympus, Zeus had Prometheus chained to Mount Caucasus, where Ethon was set to gnaw on his liver. The liver would regenerate each night, only to be eaten again by Ethon. Prometheus' son Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha would bat off Ethon while they cared for the chained Prometheus. Ethon was eventually slain by Heracles and Prometheus was released. In some myths it is said that Heracles used a giant rattle to scare away the Ethon forever, while others say he wrestled it to death.
