Exoteric knowledge is knowledge that is publicly available and pertains solely to what is thought to be "reality" considered manifest "outside" oneself. There is one pervasive meme in the body of esoteric knowledge nowadays readily accessible to the interested. It insists that the perceived outside reality is merely an internal fabrication of the observer and has no existence or substance outside the imagination of the observer. Thus, the reality we interact with, exploring this thought further, is therefore merely a consensus we have reached and which may change if we choose to imagine it otherwise. Therefore in accordance with the preceding, one may well come to the conclusion that whatever may be pointed out to be "exoteric" is in fact "esoteric".

The term "exoteric" is mostly used in conjunction with exoteric religions such as Christianity and Islam the teaching of which tend to shift the focus of the believer away from the exploration of the inner self towards the unreserved submission to outside authority (religio - realignment).

The prefix 'exo' has Greek roots and means "outer".
