The Naval Light Infantry and Naval Commandos units are under command of the Force Maritime des Fusiliers Marins et Commandos (FORFUSCO) in Lorient. It is headed by an officer with the title of Commandement des Fusiliers Marins et Commandos (COFUSCO).

This force carries out:

• Land operations from the sea
• Special operations
• Protection of key sites of the French Navy
• Improvements to the security of elements of the naval forces.

A 1 700-man strong force, the FORFUSCO is the fourth organic force of the French Navy.
