[edit] How it Works

The product's active ingredient, cyclodextrin binds or entraps various hydrophobic compounds that may cause odors.<ref>Chemical Functional Definitions - Cyclodextrin. Procter&Gamble (2005).</ref> While Febreze and other products based on cyclodextrin mask odors successfully, they are not replacements for actual cleaning or fresh air.

[edit] Animal Safety

Though it has been speculated that Febreze may be harmful to household pets, the Animal Poison Control Center, a unit of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), has investigated this and "considers Febreze safe in households with dogs and cats when used as directed."<ref>American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (January 11, 2002). [edit] Product line expansions

Febreze also sells an air freshener system called ScentStories. The system is similar to a CD player in its form, however it plays cartridges with five scents that are related to a common theme, such as Mountain Trails or Vanilla. The device will release one of its five scents, switching them on a regular basis. The theory behind constantly switching smells is because the human nose is subject to olfactory fatigue. This causes a smell to appear to dissipate after a period of time, eventually becoming unnoticeable. In reality the smell is as strong as it was previously, but the nose does not pick up on the scent after smelling it for so long a time. The ScentStories system overcomes this problem by changing the scent at a regular interval, thus ensuring that the smells stay noticeable.

[edit] Slogans

  • "Gets bad smells out of fabric. For good."
  • "It's that fresh."
  • "Spray on, freshness lovers, spray on."
