Filipstad Municipality is a Municipality in Värmland, in west central Sweden. Its seat is in Filipstad with 6,300 inhabitants at an elevation of 155 metres.

Filipstad received city privileges in 1611 by Charles IX of Sweden, who named it after his son Duke Carl Philip (1601–1622; younger brother of Gustavus Adolphus).

After a major fire of forest and towns in 1694 Filipstad lost the privileges, as it was believed the remaining forest would not be sufficient if Filipstad was to be rebuilt.

In 1835 the rights were regranted
