Flinders Island is an island in the Bass Strait, located 20 km from the north-eastern tip of Tasmania, Australia. It is the largest island of the Furneaux Group.
It is part of the state of Tasmania, and part of the Municipality of Flinders local government area. Note that Flinders Island is only one of the many islands included in the Municipal area.
The island is approximately 75 km from north to south, and 40 km from east to west. The total land area of the island is 1333 km². With a height of 756m Mt. Strzelecki is the island's highest peak. Its population is just over 1000 people.
Major population centres include Whitemark (which has the island's main airstrip) and Lady Barron. A second airfield has been developed on the island by Victorian sand magnate Gary Morrison. Mr Morrison plans to develop Flinders Island into a major tourist destination within the next 5 years. Discussions are currently underway with Greg Norman Golf Course design to develop a 72 hole championship layout and a 500 room hotel in Lady Barron.
