The Galaxy class is a fictional class of starship in the science fiction franchise Star Trek. The most notable Galaxy class starship is the USS Enterprise-D, the primary setting of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry stated that only six Galaxy-class starships had been constructed,<ref>Okuda, Mike, Denise, Okuda with Mirek, Debbie (1999). The Star Trek Encyclopedia. Pocket Books. ISBN 0-671-53609-5.</ref> and the USS Yamato is the only other Galaxy-class vessel to appear in The Next Generation. Several additional Galaxy-class ships appear in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

[edit] Design

The first Galaxy class starships were designed in the early 2360s at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. Designers on the project included Orfil Quinteros and Leah Brahms.<ref name="Booby Trap">"Booby Trap." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref><ref name="OneZero">"11001001." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref>

The ship's design is loosely similar to that of the Constitution class, featuring a saucer section connected via a vertical pylon to the stardrive section. Affixed to the rear of the stardrive section are two pylons atop of each is a warp nacelle.

The ship is capable of saucer separation and subsequent re-docking, used sometimes for leaving the civilian population behind when the stardrive section goes into combat,<ref name="Encounter at Farpoint">"Encounter at Farpoint." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref><ref name="The Arsenal of Freedom">"The Arsenal of Freedom." In real life, the Galaxy class was designed by Andrew Probert for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Interiors were designed by Probert and Herman Zimmerman during the first season. Richard D. James designed and rebuilt the sets for the remaining six years, while Zimmerman returned for Star Trek: Generations.

[edit] Technical details

[edit] Command

The main bridge is located on Deck 1, and three distinct variants have been seen: the Enterprise bridge during TNG's run (which undergoes a minor redesign in the show's first two seasons), the Enterprise bridge in Star Trek: Generations, and the USS Odyssey bridge.<ref name="The Jem'Hadar">"The Jem'Hadar." [edit] Science and research

The Galaxy class Enterprise supports an array of scientific disciplines, with laboratories and departments devoted to stellar cartography, exobiology, cetology, astrophysics, cybernetics, archaeology, cultural anthropology, botany, hydroponics, and planetary geosciences.

[edit] Tactical

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, the Enterprise is armed with twelve Type X phaser arrays and two burst fire photon torpedo launchers, each capable of firing ten invididual torpedos at a time. One phaser array is mounted on the cobra head of the secondary hull while a photon torpedo launcher is mounted on the ventral aft of the saucer; both are inoperative while in the docked configuration. The ship also has a high capacity shield grid and at least 275 photon torpedoes.<ref name="Conundrum">"Conundrum." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref>

By 2371, at least one Galaxy variant, the USS Venture, is equipped with two additional phaser arrays, one mounted on each warp nacelle.

[edit] Transportation

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, the Galaxy class Enterprise has at least six transporter rooms and twenty transporter systems. The ship has one large main shuttlebay in the saucer section, supported by two smaller bays in the stardrive section. The ship carries at least three varieties of shuttlecraft and a captain's yacht.

[edit] Medical and life support systems

The Galaxy class Enterprise includes a sickbay and a number of labs and other medical facilities. The shuttlebays, cargo bays, and other areas of the ship can be converted into triage wards.<ref name="Ethics">"Ethics." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref> Other areas, such as Ten-Forward, can serve as emergency shelters.<ref name="Disaster">"Disaster." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref>

[edit] Crew support

The Galaxy class Enterprise has amenities such as holodecks,<ref name="Encounter at Farpoint" /> a school,<ref name="The Offspring">"The Offspring." [edit] Known Galaxy-class starships

In addition to these vessels, several unnamed or unidentifiable Galaxy-class ships appear in DS9's "A Time to Stand" and "Sacrifice of Angels" and in Voyager's "Endgame".

USS Challenger (NCC-71099)
Named for the Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-099), the starship Challenger is commanded by Captain Geordi La Forge in an alternate universe, attempting to prevent the Delta Flyer from altering the timeline circa stardate 67143.6 in the year 2390.<ref name="Timeless">"Timeless." Star Trek: Voyager. </ref>
USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)
Named for several naval vessels in Earth history as well as several previous Starfleet vessels, the Enterprise-D was launched from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on stardate 40759.5 and for most of her career is commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The ship's stardrive section is destroyed by a warp core breach after engaging the Duras sisters' bird of prey, and the saucer crash lands on Veridian III.<ref name="StarTrekVII" />
USS Galaxy (NCC-70637)
The Galaxy is mentioned in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual as the class pathfinder vessel, with the registry NX-70637. It is depicted in late DS9, where it is part of the fleet that takes the Chin'toka system<ref name="Tears of the Prophets">"Tears of the Prophets." Star Trek: Deep Space 9. </ref> and is part of Battle Group Omega sent to intercept the Reman warship Scimitar in 2379.<ref name="StarTrekNemesis">Star Trek: Nemesis, (2002).</ref>
USS Magellan
Named for Ferdinand Magellan, the starship Magellan is part of the fleet sent to liberate Deep Space Nine in 2374. At least two Galaxy-class ships are seen on screen in the episode, the other being the Venture, but the Magellan is not explicitly identified as one of them.<ref name="Sacrifice of Angels">"Sacrifice of Angels." Star Trek: Deep Space 9. </ref>
The USS Odyssey shortly after a Jem'Hadar kamikaze attack

USS Odyssey (NCC-71832)
In 2370, the Odyssey, under the command of Captain Keogh, is dispatched to the Gamma Quadrant accompanied by three runabouts in an attempt to rescue Commander Benjamin Sisko. A Jem'Hadar attack force is encountered, and in the ensuing engagement the Odyssey is destroyed in a kamikaze attack.<ref name="The Jem'Hadar" />
USS Trinculo (NCC-71867)
Named for the moon and character of Trinculo, the starship Trinculo is part of the fleet sent to liberate Deep Space Nine in 2374.<ref name="Sacrifice of Angels" />
USS Venture (NCC-71854)
Circa stardate 49011.4, the starship Venture is sent to Deep Space Nine in response to the Klingon invasion of Cardassian space (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior, Part II"). The Venture fights in the Battle of Bajor as part of the fleet sent to liberate Deep Space Nine from the Dominion (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels"). The Venture is also part of the fleet that invades the Chin'toka system in 2374.<ref name="Tears of the Prophets" />
USS Yamato (NCC-71807)
Named for the Japanese battleship Yamato, the starship Yamato is commanded by Captain Donald Varley and destroyed circa stardate 42193.6 in 2365 by a warp core breach.<ref name="Contagion">"Contagion." Star Trek: The Next Generation. </ref> In "Where Silence Has Lease", William Riker reads a phantom Yamato's registry number as "NCC-1305-E", but this conflicts with the shooting model's registry in both that episode and "Contagion". According to The Star Trek Encyclopedia, NCC-71807 is the "correct" registry. According to technical illustrator and modeller Rick Sternbach, the ship's name is not a deliberate reference to the Japanese anime series Space Battleship Yamato (or Star Blazers in North America); Sternbach stated at AnimeCon 1991 that the writers independently coined the ship's name without his input.
