Gaol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gaol can refer to:
- Gaol, early Modern English for a place of legal detention. Although currently spelt as jail in American and often in British usage, gaol is still considered the official spelling in British English, New Zealand English, and Australian English; both spellings have the same pronunciation. In American usage jails and prisons are very different and used for different purposes, but British English does not make the same distinction.
- Gaol (god), a wind god in Iroquois mythology
- Gaol fever, another name for epidemic typhus
