Gary the Snail is a character in the Nickelodeon animated series series SpongeBob SquarePants, which first aired in July 1999. Gary is SpongeBob's pet snail, although his behavior in several aspects resembles a housecat.

Gary is an intelligent, fully domesticated, sea snail born in Bikini Bottom. His intelligence shines through in the fact that he generally has much smarter solutions to SpongeBob's dilemmas than SpongeBob does. Gary tends to disagree with some of SpongeBob's ideas, and usually makes an effort to warn SpongeBob. Some of Gary's meows are lower pitched, some are higher pitched; these could possibly indicate that Gary uses different tones of his voice to communicate with SpongeBob, who is able to take more meaning out of these than most people. Gary loves pretending to be Squidward, playing music, reading books, and eating Snail-Po Snail Food, among many other activities. He especially enjoys famous literature such as selected works by Emily Dickinson, and is an accomplished snail-poet himself. He has his own bed, exercise wheel, and water and food bowls, and expects his food bowl to always be full. He also knows how to play the violin, as revealed in the episode "Something Smells". It is also noted that Gary can tie his shoes. SpongeBob mentions in the episode "Jellyfish Hunter" that Gary pays a majority of the bills, if not all. In "Chocolate with Nuts" it is seen that he gets most of the mail. Gary the Snail is inquisitive, curious, and always ready to learn something new. Gary serves SpongeBob his toast and jelly, every time he goes to work in the morning, and also serves him coffee. He even reads the daily newspaper on a skateboard. It also seems that he sometimes answers the phone for SpongeBob as hinted at in "Jellyfish Hunter". It is revealed in the episode "Karate Island" that the inside of Gary's shell is a disaster area.

He ran away from SpongeBob in one episode because SpongeBob forgot to feed him. He went into an alley, to find a gang of street snails. Terrified, he ran away from them. All they wanted was to give him nachos, though. He was then found by an elderly female owner who fed him a lot, and whatever he wanted. It turned out she had killed several snails through overfeeding.

[edit] Quotes

  • "Meow"
  • "hmm... NO" (from "The Secret Box")
  • In "Where's Gary?", made a sickening grumbling noise after SpongeBob asked Gary if he wanted food (post-rescue)
  • "Meow--Plankton" (from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie)
  • "RUFF" ("Opposite Day")
  • In "Sleepy Time", Gary talks in plain English in a United Kingdom accent in his dream:
    • "SpongeBob?"
    • "How dare you invade the sanctity of my dreams?"
    • "In dreams, one is not tethered by earthly limitations."
    • "Come. For ages, dreams have been thought of as windows to another realm. 'Let me not mar that perfect dream by an auroral stain, but so adjust my daily night that it may come again.' Emily Dickinson wrote that."
    • "Here's one you might know. 'There once was a man from Peru who dreamed he was eating his shoe. He woke with a fright in the middle of the night to find that his dream had come true.'"
    • "Did you think my shell was full of hot air?"
    • "Beware of your wandering eye, you little poriferan."

[edit] Trivia

  • Gary eats Snail Nip, Snail FUD, and Snailpo.
  • Gary does a poetry recital in the Bikini Bottom Krusty Krab Talent Show Hosted By Squidward, consisting of meows.
  • Gary has his own episode, which is a half-hour special called "Where's Gary? (Have You Seen This Snail?)", originally intended to be an hour long TV Movie Premiere. In this episode, Gary runs away to Downtown Bikini Bottom, where he encounters many adversaries. He is taken in as a stray by an old lady who consistently calls him "Miss Tufsy" throughout the episode (we later discover that she calls every snail she sees "Miss Tufsy").
  • Gary's name is close to the Hellenic name for snail: saligari.
  • SpongeBob and other characters can understand Gary by his meows, similar to how everyone can understand Coco by her "cocos" in Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends.
  • In "Chocolate with Nuts" it is revealed that Gary gets most of the mail and in "Jellyfish Hunter" pays the Bills.
  • Gary has been vaccinated for rabies, snailpox, softshelldense, bagitis, lumpy bump trump, and teen angst.
  • Gary gets bad dreams by eating Krabby Pattys before bed (as revealed in Creature from the Krusty Krab).

[edit] Other Snails in Bikini Bottom similar to Gary

Gary isn't the only mollusk in Bikini Bottom. These are his friends/enemies/relatives/acquaintances/snails.

  • In the episode "Nature Pants", a life-size gigantic blue-shelled snail appears and says "Meow", in exactly the same way Gary does.
  • In the episode "One Krabs Trash", there is a scary black snail who hisses like a cat angrily towards Mr. Krabs, in the Bikini Bottom Floaters Cemetery.
  • In the episode "Dumped", SpongeBob temporarily gets a new snail named Lary, who is depicted as fierce and bad tempered (almost like Squidward). In the same episode, SpongeBob obtains a small live-action snail named Jerry, which he pulls out of his pocket long enough for a close-up, and then Jerry is put back into SpongeBob's pocket and never seen again. "Jerry" is a joke off Jerry Mouse in Tom and Jerry, and the snail Jerry is the same size as Jerry Mouse.
  • Squidward also has a pet snail, a female named Snellie, that races against Gary in the episode, "The Great Snail Race". She looks like Gary, only with long eyelashes and a purple shell. At the end of the race, Gary falls in love with her.
  • In the episode "Have You Seen This Snail?", there is a gang of outlaw snails who like nachos, oddly these snails were capable of speaking instead of meowing.
  • There are also a number of snail shells in the old ladys closet in "Have You Seen This Snail?".
  • Both SpongeBob and Squidward become snails in the episode "I Was a Teenage Gary", and they meowed also. THey ended up as their normal selves but we don't see how.
  • Also in "The Great Snail Race", an old snail, over 103 years old, with a moustache named "Lightning Larry Luciano" appears.
  • Patrick has a snail named Rocky (which is actually a pet rock) with "nerves of steel".
  • In "The Great Snail Race" (again), in the announcer's office, there's a poster with a crowned snail that looks like Gary.
  • In "The Sponge Who Could Fly", Mrs. Puff has a snail that looks exactly like Snellie. It is unknown whether that is Snellie herself, given to Ms. Puff by Squidward, a twin to Snellie, or if it's just a coincidence.
