[edit] Early life and career
After graduating from Clarkston High School in 1991 and from Michigan State University in 1995, Johns moved to Los Angeles, California. There he became assistant to film director and producer, Richard Donner.
He began writing for DC Comics with Star Spangled Comics #1 (1999) and the related series Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., a book based on the second Star-Spangled Kid and her stepfather, the original version's sidekick, Stripesy. Johns based new Star-Spangled Kid, Courtney Whitmore, on his sister Courtney, who died in the explosion of TWA Flight 800 over Long Island on July 17, 1996.

In 2000, he succeeded James Robinson as David S. Goyer's co-writer on the Justice League of America title JSA. Johns was also the writer of the DC Comics crossover event Infinite Crisis, a sequel to 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths that significantly altered the status quo of the DC Universe.
As of 2006, Johns shares a writing studio, The Empath Magic Tree House, with Jeph Loeb and Allan Heinberg. With Goyer, he co-writes the Spike TV television series 'Blade.

- Beast Boy #1-4 (1999-2000). Miniseries co-starring Beast boy and Flamebird, with co-writer Ben Raab and artist Justiniano.
- The Titans Annual #1 (2000). Johns & Raab co-wrote the two stories of this annual, a lead story with art by Justiniano featuing Changeling, Flamebird and Bushido as guest stars, and a back-up story about Bushido with art by Rick Mays.
- Titans Secret Files and Origins #2 (2000). Johns contributes as co-writer of the lead story (with co-writer Ben Raab and artist Drew Johnson, featuring Changeling and Firebird trying to assemble again a "Titans West" team) and three short stories.
- Day of Judgment #1-5 (1999). With artist Matt Smith. A event-crossover mini-series with the JLA and a most of the "magical" characters of the DCU teaming up against Asmodel. Johns also contributed to the Day of Judgment Secret Files and Origins #1.

- Superman: The Man of Steel #121 (on-sale date: December 2001) & 133 (on-sale date: December 2002). With Artists Todd Nauck (121) & Tom Derenick (133). Issue 121 was for the "All coverage" month. Issue 133 was past of the "Lost Heart" storyline running in the Superman ongoing series.
- Superman #179-180, 184-187 & 189 (2002). Issues 179-180 co-written with Jeph Loeb. Issues 184, 186, 187 & 189 were all part of several storylines running in the Superman ongoing series ("Return to Krypton", "Ending battle" & "Lost hearts") and were Drawn by Pasqual Ferry. Issue 185 was a one-shot story drawn by Brent Anderson (with a cover by Ferry).
- Superman Secret Files and Origins 2004. Co-writer of the 22-page "Suicide Watch" lead story.
- Action Comics #837-840 & *Superman #650-653 (2006). 8-part story arc "Up, up and away", co-written with Kurt Busiek, setting the Superman series in the "One year later" event post-Infinite Crisis.

- In December 2005, Wizard magazine named Johns its "Man of the Year" for his creative writing and editing work on DC's Infinite Crisis.
- In 2006, Johns wrote the Justice League Unlimited episode "Ancient History", which starred Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Vixen, and the John Stewart Green Lantern.
- The 2005 Smallville episode "Recruit" featured a villain by the name of Geoff Johns, played by Chris Carmack.
