Gera is the largest Town in the east of Thuringia, Germany. In 2003 it had about 105,000 inhabitants. Its area is 151 km².

The city was founded in the year 995. Since 1564, Gera was the residence of the Younger Line of the Reuss monarchy. In 1920 the city became part of Thuringia (German: Thüringen). Large portions of the city were destroyed by aerial bombing in 1945. Until German reunification in 1990, the city belonged to the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
