Germanwings is a low-cost airline based in Cologne Bonn Airport, Germany. It operates services to over 53 destinations in Europe; 8 within Germany and 45 destinations in Europe. Its main base is Cologne Bonn Airport, with secondary bases at Stuttgart Airport, Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport and Hamburg Airport.

The airline was established in 1997 (as "Eurowings Flug GmbH") and started operations on 27 October 2002. It is wholly owned by Eurowings. Its main competitors are more established no-frills carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet as well as other low-fare operators such as HLX.com and dba.

Germanwings' primary bases are Cologne Bonn Airport, Stuttgart Airport, Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport and Hamburg Airport, from which it serves 49 other cities throughout Europe as well as Turkey and Russia.

It will inaugurate the following new routes using an Airbus 319:
- Berlin Schönefeld-Mykonos: weekly A319-100 service starting on May 20
- Cologne/Bonn-Kerkyra: weekly A320-200 service starting on May 5
- Cologne/Bonn-Lamezia Terme: weekly A319-100 service starting on March 31
- Cologne/Bonn-Malta: 2x weekly A319-100 service starting on March 27
- Cologne/Bonn-Mykonos: weekly A319-100 service starting on May 20
- Cologne/Bonn-Rhodes: weekly A319-100 service starting on May 5
- Cologne/Bonn-Zadar (Croatia): weekly A319-100 service starting March 2007
- Hamburg-Kerkyra: weekly A319-100 service starting on May 5
- Hamburg-Split: weekly A319-100 service starting on March 25
- Stuttgart-Ankara: 2x weekly A319-100 service starting on May 19
- Stuttgart-Athens: 3x weekly A319-100 service starting on March 27
- Stuttgart-Ibiza: 2x weekly A319-100 service starting on March 25

On 7 December 2005 the airline signed an agreement to purchase 18 Airbus A319 aircraft (with a further 12 options). These are their first direct orders with Airbus and deliveries will start in July 2006 until 2008. <ref>Aero International, June 2006</ref> During winter 2004-2005 Germanwings leased two Boeing 717 from Aerolineas Baleares to test this type, but no order was made after.
