Gojra (Urdu: گوجرہ) is a Pakistani city 50km from Faisalabad. It has a history of more than hundred years, and being the centre of the cultivated lands, the city was famous for its "Mandi" (market) for cash crops. The market was mainly handled by the Hindus and Sikhs but more recently has been run by Muslims following the establishment of Pakistan.

[edit] Eye Surgery

In the 1930s when Gojra was part of the District Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), it was a renowned centre for eye surgery. Its fame for ophthalmic excellence was know throughout India [1] .

One of the leading figures of Gojra was the eye surgeon, Dr. Herbhajan Singh. He gave eyesight to a huge number of patients whose eyes could not be cured by many of the ophthalmologists in more sophisticated hospitals in big cities like Delhi, Lahore or Calcutta [2]. Another leading figure was Dr.Hafeez who cured eyes of many. Currently a project to construct a 1400 bed eye hospital in Gojra is underway.

In conformity with the rich tradition of Gojra about Eye Care, A son of Gojra Dr Amir Ali Majid [3] Sitara i Imtiaz, has planned to revive the lost glory of his City in this field. He is the first Blind person in history who carries dual qualifications of Bar at Law ( Barrister ) and DCL ( Doctor of civil Law , A degree higher than PhD ). He felt the pain of the people of Gojra and surroundings who lost their eyesight just because they could not get the necessary treatment or eitherly they could not afford it. He intend to establish GOJRA EYE COMPLEX [4] that would benefit poor of his city with instantanous and free eye care. For this cause, he has met authoritative figures like President Pervez Musharraf, Governor Punjab Retd. Gen. Khalid Maqbool, MNA Amjad Warraich. He wanted to start the construction as soon as possible and it is hoped it will soon InshALLAH start serving people.At present Mr.Adnan Baig is working actively for this noble cause. Gojra became famous in Pakistan after contributing a number of players to the Pakistan Hockey team. Iqbal Bali and Muhammad Aslam (famous as Aslam Roda) served in the Pakistan hockey team. When they returned to Gojra they established their own hockey teams, and provided fre training to the youth of the city. The biggest event in the calendar of the city used to be the annual fixture between these two teams. This match use to attract a huge crowd. This actually created a nursery for the Pakistan hockey team and many of the Pakistan hockey team players like Manzoor-ul-Hasan, Rasheed-ul-Hasan, Tahir Zaman, Muhammad Shahbaz Junior,Khawar Javedd International,Muhammad Qasim Goalkeeper,were originally trained from this institution.

The city has a population of more than 100,000. The people of Gojra are kind and famous for their hospitality, but at the same time long-standing fights between different castes settled in Gojra make national news [citation needed].

[edit] Plans to Establish First University in Gojra, "Aligarh University"

It is planned to establish a Pilot University at 244 G.B. Gojra. This University, would be known as " American University". All the pre-requisites for the establishment of a most modern University are being completed. [citation needed]

This University will have a variety of disciplines including Arts, Sciences, Information and other Advanced Technologies and a Medical College with a 200 Bed Hospital. [citation needed]

Aligarh Information Technology Center 244 G.B has been established since October 2003 under the supervision of an IT Expert Mr.kashif Ali Randhawa. This center of excellence is providing the basic training of computer sciences and Information technology to the students of Aligarh University. This center is also working as internet resourse center with a well equipped laboratory of 50 computers for the surrounding community.

There is very high rate of literate persons in Gojra. 59% Peoples up to Matric 17% Peoples up to F.A 11% Peoples up to B.A 06% Peoples up to M.A and 2% Peoples have Ph.d These literatecy rates are very high in the whole world which are about 92-93%
