Compendium of Chemical Terminology

Compendium of Chemical Terminology (ISBN 0-86542-684-8) is a book published by IUPAC containing internationally accepted definitions for terms in chemistry. Work on the first edition was initiated by Victor Gold, hence its informal name, the Gold Book.
The first edition was published in 1987 and the second one, edited by A. D. McNaught and A. Wilkinson, was published in 1997. A slightly expanded version of the Gold Book is also freely searchable online.
Unfortunately, some of the terms in the Gold Book contradict with the nomenclature rules stated in the IUPAC green book. This is especially the case for the physical property mass-to-charge ratio where the Gold Book uses an abbreviation of m/z due to historic reasons.<ref>IUPAC Gold Book, mass-to-charge ratio</ref> This is in contrast with the IUPAC green book, the IUPAP red book as well as the rules set by ISO 31.
