"Golden Slumbers" is a song by The Beatles, part of the climactic medley on their 1969 album Abbey Road. Mainly written by Paul McCartney, it is based upon a poem by Thomas Dekker and written in a lullaby style. Paul McCartney was the lead vocalist. Halfway through, McCartney briefly switches from his clear melodic voice to a slightly distorted voice (used often in his solo career and with Wings), more typical of heavy rock singers. It was covered by Ben Folds on the I Am Sam soundtrack in 2002 and by Phil Collins in In My Life: Tribute to George Martin (1998). It was also covered by Claudine Longet. It segues into "Carry That Weight".
This song starts off much like "Fool on the Hill" from the Magical Mystery Tour album. The singing style during the middle of the song is notable for the Beatles, as it was rarely, if ever, employed by Paul during his time with the Beatles. The song begins the progression of songs that lead up to the end of the album, not including the spliced in "Her Majesty." The way that these songs were broken up, although the three quite clearly go together, is very unique for this time period, like many of the writing and recording styles of the Beatles. While this occurs relatively often today, it was very progressive during the late sixties. "Golden Slumbers" is often overlooked in the shadows of "Come Together," "Carry That Weight," "Oh Darling," and "Something," although it is a superbly written song, along the same styles of "Eleanor Rigby" and "She's Leaving Home." However, even with its similarity, this song stands out as somewhat different even among these, as does the entire Abbey Road album among the collection of other Beatles albums.
Only two members are to be heard on this song. Paul himself on vocals, piano and bass. Ringo plays the drums.
