Goosebumps is a television series that aired on Fox Kids, and in Canada on YTV from 1995 to 1998. It is a horror anthology series for children, based on the Goosebumps books by R. L. Stine (who also hosts the show), and its spinoffs Goosebumps 2000, and Goosebumps: 10 Tales to....

The episodes ran for a half hour and were for the most part low budget. Some consider the actors present in the series to be of subpar quality. Several actors portray different roles; Scott Wickware, Corey Sevier and John White are the most popular, each featured in at least 5 episodes.

The show ran for three full-length seasons, and an eight-episode fourth season; totalling 76 episodes. In total, forty-three of the original books were adapted, while an original sequel episode titled "More Monster Blood" was produced as an alternative to three of the remaining 19 books. Also of note is the lack of a "Night of the Living Dummy" adaptation, despite three of its four sequels being adapted. Similarly, "Return of the Mummy" was adapted for the show, but its immediate predecessor "The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb" was not.

In the show's third season, nine short stories from the "Tales to Give Yourself Goosebumps" anthologies were adapted into ten episodes (including a two-parter, "Perfect School"). Also included was the original "Chillogy", a three-parter made exclusively for the show. "Cry of the Cat" and "Bride of the Living Dummy" became the only adaptations from the "Goosebumps 2000" spin-off series.

In the third season, the series' title was changed to The Ultimate Goosebumps.

Despite rumours, Steve Levitan of Protocol Ent has confirmed that the book “The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena”, has never been seriously considered to be made into an episode.

[edit] Cancellation

The show was cancelled in early 1998, probably for special effects costs, and because the popularity lowered. Around this time the books had become less popular as the Goosebumps fad finished.

[edit] Trivia

  • The ending of both the book and the episode "Welcome to Camp Nightmare" is a definite reference to the classic Twilight Zone episode "Third from the Sun", in which it is revealed that the protagonist and his family are aliens and that they are travelling towards Earth.
  • Sometimes the episodes would reference other goosebumps books. For example, the Chillogy series showed a shop in Karlsville called "The Cuckoo Clock of Doom".
