Greater Montreal Area

The Greater Montreal Area is a term used to describe either the Montreal, Quebec, Canada Census Metropolitan Area or the Montreal Metropolitan Community (French: Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal). The CMA is defined by Statistics Canada while the Montreal Metropolitan Community is a level of government in Quebec, and is led by a president, who is currently Gérald Tremblay, mayor of Montreal. The Metropolitan Community covers an area of 3,838 km² and has an estimated population of 3,493,485. According to Statistics Canada, the 2004 population of the Montreal CMA was 3,707,842 people (Statistics Canada) and its area was 4,047 km². The Montreal Area is part of the Montreal-Ottawa Corridor metropolitan area.
