Gregorio Fuentes is the probable model for Hemingway's eponymous "Old Man" in his The Old Man and the Sea.

Gregorio Fuentes (July 11, 1897January 13, 2002) was a Cuban nautical captain. He was born on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, and migrated to Cuba when he was six years old.

Fuentes was captain of the Pilar, which he sailed through Cuba with his friend Ernest Hemingway whom he met in 1928. He was probably the inspiration for the protagonist of The Old Man and the Sea.

Fuentes, suffering from cancer, died in Cojimar in 2002, never having read The Old Man and the Sea. He was 104 years old.
