[edit] History

Groenlo orginates from the beginning of the 7th century. Groenlo became a Guelders enclave of Borculo. On december 2, 1277, it received city rights from landgrave Reinoud I of Zutphen. There were 6 counsils, of which four were aldermen en two mayors. The judicial archive of Groenlo is very complete. Since 1406, Groenlo has been part of the bishop of Münster. The city was an important tradecentre along the German-Dutch traderoute, which created a rich variety of guilds. It became a strong stronghold during the 16th and 17th century. The stronghold was repeatedly besieged during the Eighty Years' War. In 1597 the city was conquered by Maurice of Nassau. In 1606 it was reconquerd by Spanish troops lead by Spinola. In 1627 Groenlo was besieged and conquered by Frederik Hendrik, on of Groenlo's most important historical facts, something which can still be found in modern day life, since on of its restaurants in it's historical centre is named Frederik Hendrik.
