In 2006, approximate population of city and it's surroundings is 71,000 <ref>http://www.world-gazetteer.com/wg.php?x=&men=gpro&lng=en&dat=32&geo=-172&srt=npan&col=aohdq&pt=a&va=x&geo=443761330</ref>. Gujar Khan is famous for its natural reserves of Oil, Gas, and also being the heart of Potohar region.

[edit] History

For the initial history of Gujar Khan, Mr Raja Muhammad Arif Minhas (local historian) tells a very interesting story. According to him, Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi (October 2, 971–April 30, 1030) defeated Raja Jayapala and his son Anandapala. In the battle near Tala Gogiah after defeating these Rajput, he decided to built accommodation for his soldiers <ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi ordered his slave Ayaz to select a place for the accommodation <ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. Ayaz had chosen the area (which is now Gujar Khan) and started construction <ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. First a pond had been digged so that there will no problem of water in future<ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. Then some buildings had been constructed around it<ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. While construction, autumn started and ground had bursted and there were cracks in ground <ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi was annoyed to see the behavior of this land and ordered to stop the construction of building<ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. He gave the name PHAT HAR to this land. Later, the region is named as Potohar <ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>. In urdu, PHAT mean burst and HAR mean ground. Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi came and went like storm but he left Nakshe Ayaz or Symbol of Ayaz. This Nakshe Ayaz was called Ayazsar and later called Hayatsar <ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>.

There are some Conspiracies about why Gujar Khan is called Gujar Khan? Some people believe that in 1767, a high caste General, Sirdar Gujar Singh, had ruled from Rawalpindi to Attock, and the city is named after him<ref>http://www.gujarkhannews.com/history/history1.html</ref>.
