Gummy Bears are a rubbery-textured confectionery, roughly 2 cm long, shaped in the form of little bears.

The Gummy Bear originates in Germany where it is hugely popular under the name Gummibär ("rubber bear"). The German company Haribo from Bonn first produced bear-shaped sweets in 1922 and introduced its Gold-Bear product in the 1960s. The success of Gummy Bears has spawned many gummy animals and objects: worms, frogs, hamburgers, cherries, cola bottles, sharks, apples, oranges, and even gummy Ampelmännchen. Today, many brands of gummy bears exist on the market. Trolli is a well-known knockoff gummy candy manufacturer and was the first to introduce "gummi worms" in 1981.

Haribo Gummy Bears usually come in Raspberry (red), Pineapple (white/clear), Orange, Strawberry (green), and Lemon (yellow), however, many offshoot companies (typically the vegan or health-related gummy bears) may change up the flavors to more exotic or in higher amounts.

[edit] Cartoon series
From 1985 to 1991, Disney produced a cartoon series called Adventures of the Gummi Bears. In this series, a group of reclusive anthropomorphic bears explore their lost heritage and prevent their enemies from exploiting it, with the help of a few trusted humans. When facing danger, these Gummi Bears could drink their secret potion called "Gummi Berry Juice" which gave them a burst of energy and allowed them to bounce on their little bear behinds, presumably creating the gummi factor in the Gummi Bear anatomy.

At the end of a meal at Michelangelo's Restaurant Cafe in San Francisco, guests are treated to a novel albeit unsanitary treat—a communal bowl of gummy bears.[1]
Some ice cream parlors, such as Cold Stone Creamery and Marble Slab Creamery offer gummy bears as a topping for the ice cream.[2]

The consistency of gummy bears has been proposed as ideal for breast implants. "Gummy Bear breast implants" have been on the market since 2005. [3]
[edit] Haribo Jelly Beans
Haribo uses excess Gummy Bear solution to produce Haribo Gelly Beans. The Jelly Bean-esque candy is sold within Germany and Poland. Gelly Beans have been in production since 2001. [4]
