Hadal zone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hadal zone is the deepest part of the ocean. Any region greater than 6,000 meters (19,700 feet) below the surface of the ocean is in the hadal zone. This zone, which includes the ocean trenches, is virtually unexplored. It is suspected that few organisms live in the hadal zone; those that do likely depend on food falling from above or thermal vents deep on the surface of the ocean. These creatures, called thermophiles, live off of the intense heat and chemical reactions at the bases of deep-sea volcanoes.
The word "hadal" is red to the word Hades, meaning "underworld".
