When the Edmonton Oilers announced plans to suspend operations of the previous Hamilton Bulldogs franchise, local interests secured ownership of the Quebec Citadelles and relocated them to Hamilton. Fans voted to keep the Bulldogs name which won over the Hamilton Canadiens and Hamilton Habs. The team's primary affiliate has been the Montreal Canadiens, but had a partial agreement with the Edmonton Oilers in 2002-03 and again in 2005-06.
