Hamlet is a 1990 film based on the Shakespearean play of the same name. Mel Gibson has the title role, Glenn Close is his mother, Queen Gertrude, Alan Bates plays Claudius, and Helena Bonham Carter appears as Ophelia. It was directed by Franco Zeffirelli.

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven was used as a location in the film.

Hamlet returns to Denmark when his father, the King (also named Hamlet), dies. His mother, Gertrude, has hastily re-married. She weds with Hamlet's uncle Claudius, who becomes the new King. The spirit of Hamlet's father comes to Hamlet and claims that he was murdered by Claudius. The apparition wants Hamlet to avenge him, but not to harm his mother.
