Hannibal, a novel by Thomas Harris, is the source material for the film Hannibal, directed by Ridley Scott. The novel takes place seven years after the events of The Silence of the Lambs and deals with the intended revenge of one of Hannibal Lecter's victims.

[edit] Plot summary

Hannibal is set seven years after The Silence of the Lambs. Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the cannibal having escaped from the asylum at the end of the last installment, has still not been found by the FBI. Special agent Clarice Starling, who interviewed Dr. Lecter extensively to find insight into mind of the vicious serial killer Buffalo Bill, has recurring dreams about the doctor, having been forced to tell him personal secrets. Her nemesis in the U.S. Department of Justice, Paul Krendler, wants to fire her after a failed raid, but she is retained in order to help catch Hannibal.

Starling is not alone in her pursuit. Mason Verger, a slaughterhouse mogul, also wants to find Dr. Lecter because he manipulated Verger into extreme self-mutilation. Verger intends to exact revenge on the doctor by feeding him to specially bred boars. With the help of the police commissioner of Florence, Commissario Pazzi, who discovers that Lecter is living in Florence, Verger plans to catch Hannibal and bring him to the United States. While Pazzi tries to catch Lecter, the FBI fires Clarice. On the day when Pazzi and Verger's team intend to catch Hannibal, Hannibal discovers Pazzi's treachery and kills him before returning to Washington to observe Clarice Starling.

After he arrives, Lecter kills a man to tell Starling he is back. Next, during his observation, Verger's team catches him in front of Starling's eyes. Verger begins to enact his revenge, but is thwarted by Clarice's rescue mission. Clarice saves Hannibal from the boars, but one of Verger's men stuns her with a strong narcotic. Hannibal, now free, kills the man with Clarice's gun and carries her away. Soon after, Mason Verger's sister kills him, while Dr. Lecter admits to the crime via a phone call.

In his secluded beach house, Lecter begins brainwashing with Clarice in a mixture of psychotherapy and manipulation. Lecter has captured Clarice's rival Krendler and shares his cooked brain with Clarice. After dinner, Starling and Hannibal speak about their life and their families.

Three years later, they are a couple, traveling around the world eluding law enforcement.
