A haversack, or havresack is a backpack.

The word originally referred to a bag which riders provide for horses to carry oats (through the French from German language Hafersack and Dutch language haverzak, an oat-sack, a nose-bag for a horse, Hafer or Haver meaning oats). In Scotland and the north of England, the word 'haver' is still used to mean 'oats,' as in 'haver-meal' or 'haver-bread.'
